The Montessori philosophy and teaching method was created by Dr Maria Montessori. Montessori has been a recognized teaching method for over a century. In 1907 Dr Montessori was asked to open a childcare centre for underprivileged children in Rome, which she called Casa dei Bambini, or “Children’s House”. While caring for and teaching the children she observed that children absorbed knowledge from their surroundings, essentially teaching themselves. Based on her experience with the children in her care, Dr Montessori created the Montessori teaching method. Unlike traditional teacher-centred education, the Montessori education is focused on inspiring children to drive their own learning.
It didn’t take long for the Montessori teaching method to reach North America. By 1913 there were hundreds of schools dedicated to Dr Montessori’s philosophy. Through the years the program has expanded but at its core has remained the same, remaining focused on providing children with an exceptional education and building a strong foundation for their future.
Red Deer Montessori School was established in 2001 to provide an enriched child-focused program based on Maria Montessori's philosophy of education.
